“It’s really trivial to infect a Mac these days,” said Thomas Reed, Malwarebytes’ director of Mac and mobile research. “The only difference is that for historic reasons, there’s so much more malware on Windows. That may not always be the case.” Reed said that Apple makes it too easy to digitally “sign” malware to get past macOS’ Gatekeeper software, and that XProtect, the antivirus software built into Macs, is too weak to stop serious malware....

The Meta Quest Pro is the company’s first entry into a high-end VR headset space. Formerly Project Cambria, the Quest Pro is lighter and sleeker than anything the company has launched thus far. And it’s much more powerful and has a host of tricks up its sleeve including putting sensors and a processor into the controllers so they can track their position independently of the headset and improved eye and facial tracking....
Or, rather, the company is bringing Microsoft Defender to macOS, because Microsoft is rebranding the software as it takes Windows Defender beyond Windows (it’s also apparently coming to Linux!). Currently available to business users in a preview version, Microsoft Defender will support macOS Mojave, macOS High Sierra and macOS Sierra machines. Another month, another problem with Windows 10 updates. Now, users are reporting a bug in a recent update to the operating system that prevents the update from installing, which sends some devices into an endless loop of failed installations. Fortunately for those users, the company acknowledged the issue late yesterday (Oct. 3), in a Microsoft Community forum post (opens in new tab) about the error. The problem is big enough, though, that the forum thread about the error is now 30 pages long....
The few changes made to this latest model are enough to elevate it above the previous versions. First, the clamshell device was updated with 10th Gen Intel CPUs, which provide faster computing and graphics performance. The Surface Laptop 3 also comes in an all-metal chassis with fresh color options (similar to what the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 offers), and the new USB-C port is a feature we’ve long awaited. We’re still hoping for a Thunderbolt 3 port and thinner display bezels, and Microsoft’s egregious pricing structure puts the Surface Laptop 3’s value into question....
